SAMMY FIGUEROA IS COLLABORATING WITH BRAZILIAN SINGER GLAUCIA NASSER

With the World Cup and the upcoming Olympics, Brazil’s mix of diverse, lively culture and complex social challenges have moved into the world spotlight. Now, a recent collaboration between legendary Latin jazz percussionist Sammy Figueroa, who has played with the likes of Miles Davis and Mariah Carey, and Brazilian singer Glaucia Nasser shines a different light on how Brazilian and Latin America culture intertwine.
The two met when Figueroa saw Nasser sing at a Miami show where they were introduced to each other and connected immediately. “I was just the opening act, but I talked to Sammy after the show and told him about my idea for mixing my voice with his style,” recalls Nasser, who envisioned recording an album of popular Brazilian songs with Figueroa’s latin rhythms.
Figueroa was more than happy to work with Nasser. “[She] was charismatic, so original in her approach to music. And she had a gorgeous voice,” said Figueroa.
Talisman (released September 9th via Savant Records) is the collaboration between Figueroa and Nasser that combines the strengths of both musicians and their musical styles. The record was produced by Figueroa’s long-time producer and partner Rachel Faro, who also co-wrote several of the songs on the album.
“This is the music of my heart,” says Nasser. “It’s an expression of love. We just let things happen. Some people thought Brazilian and Latin music couldn’t work together, but this proves it’s a beautiful combination.”
